It covers a wide range of specific visual problems that are related to the nervous system &#8211; visual problems that do not originate with the eyes themselves.<\/li>\n<li>Neuro-ophthalmology concerns include: optic nerve problems (such as optic neuritis and ischemic optic neuropathy), visual field loss, unexplained visual loss, transient visual loss, visual disturbances, double vision, abnormal eye movements, thyroid eye disease, myasthenia gravis, unequal pupil size, and eyelid abnormalities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\n\t\tAbout Neuro-Ophthalmology\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p><strong>What is neuro-ophthalmology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Neuro-ophthalmology is a sub-specialty of both neurology and ophthalmology. It covers a wide range of specific visual problems that are related to the nervous system &#8211; visual problems that do not originate with the eyes themselves.<\/p>\n<p>We use almost half of the brain for vision-related activities, including sight and moving the eyes. Neuro-ophthalmology, a subspecialty of both neurology and ophthalmology, requires specialized training and expertise in problems of the eye, brain, nerves and muscles.<\/p>\n<p>Although some problems seen by neuro-ophthalmologist are not worrisome, other conditions can worsen and cause permanent visual loss, or even become life threatening. Sometimes the problem is confined to the optic nerve or the nervous system and other times it is related to a general medical condition. A neuro-ophthalmologist evaluates patients from the neurologic, ophthalmologic, and medical standpoints to diagnose and treat a wide variety of problems. Costly medical testing may be avoided.<\/p>\n<p>Patients with poorly defined visual symptoms or conditions that remain unresolved despite previous ophthalmic and neurologic evaluations may benefit from neuro-ophthalmic evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the common problems evaluated in neuro-ophthalmology include: optic nerve problems (such as optic neuritis and ischemic optic neuropathy), visual field loss, unexplained visual loss, transient visual loss, visual disturbances, double vision, abnormal eye movements, thyroid eye disease, myasthenia gravis, unequal pupil size, and eyelid abnormalities.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\">Neuro-ophthalmic Conditions<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-0\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t<p>There are a wide variety of neuro-ophthalmic conditions, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abnormal eye movements (ophthalmoparesis or nystagmus)<\/li>\n<li>Double vision<\/li>\n<li>Intracranial lesions affecting the visual pathway<\/li>\n<li>Ischemic optic neuropathy<\/li>\n<li>Migraine and related visual complaints<\/li>\n<li>Optic disc swelling<\/li>\n<li>Optic neuritis and other optic nerve problems<\/li>\n<li>Pupillary abnormalities<\/li>\n<li>Unexplained vision loss<\/li>\n<li>Visual field defects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Abnormal eye movements (ophthalmoparesis or nystagmus)<\/strong> &#8211; Ophthalmoplegia is a paralysis or weakness of one or more of the muscles that control eye movement. Nystagmus is a vision condition in which the eyes make repetitive, uncontrolled movements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Double vision &#8211;<\/strong> Called diplopia, double vision can result from a range of underlying conditions. Diplopia can affect just one eye or both.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intracranial lesions<\/strong> affecting the visual pathway<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ischemic optic neuropathy &#8211;<\/strong> A condition where blood does not flow properly to your eye&#8217;s&nbsp;optic&nbsp;nerve, eventually causing lasting damage to this nerve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Migraine<\/strong> and related visual complaints<\/p>\n<p><strong>Optic disc swelling (<\/strong><strong>Papilledema&nbsp;or papilloedema<\/strong><strong>) &#8211;<\/strong> A condition caused by increased intracranial pressure due to any cause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Optic neuritis &#8211;<\/strong> An inflammation that damages the&nbsp;optic nerve, a bundle of nerve fibers that transmits visual information from your eye to your brain<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pupillary abnormalities &#8211;<\/strong> Including dilation of the pupil or constriction of the pupil, among other conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unexplained vision loss<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Visual field defects<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-1\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\">Diagnosing Neuro-ophthalmic Diseases<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-1\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t<p>Our ophthalmology specialists conduct comprehensive evaluations and diagnoses of neurological and systemic diseases that affect the eyes. Especially for patients with poorly defined visual symptoms or conditions that remain unresolved despite previous ophthalmic and neurologic evaluations, our ophthalmologists can often help diagnose, and then treat, the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Our ophthalmologists routinely work collaboratively with specialists across multiple disciplines to provide comprehensive, individualized neuro-ophthalmic care. For example, we work closely with Endocrinology, Neurology, Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery, Oncology, Otorhinolaryngology, Radiation Oncology, Stroke Care Specialists, among others.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-2\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-2\">Preparing for a neuro-ophthalmology evaluation<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-2\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-2\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t<p>Because neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty of both neurology and ophthalmology, preparing for your neuro-ophthalmology evaluation takes a bit of teamwork.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Request that your treating physicians send all relevant information prior to your appointment, including office notes, results of laboratory tests and reports of CT and MRI scans.<\/li>\n<li>If you have had a CT or MRI scan performed, arrange to pick up the actual CD of the study and bring them with you to your appointment, or have the facility mail them in advance.<\/li>\n<li>You will probably have your pupils dilated during the visit. The eye drops last about 4 hours and will make things look bright and blurry up close.
